April 6, 2011
Discussion of the goals was added to the agenda. Also Mr. Kraher asked to discuss federal bills HR 602, 603 and 604.
Mr. Larry Kauffman made the motion to approve the agenda and past minutes. Mr. Joe Kraher seconded the motion. All were in favor.
Mr. Kraher stated he thought bills HR 602, 603 and 604 looked pretty good. Ms. Linda Williams stated not everyone is happy with the bills because it would supply 48 months of supported employment instead of 18 months. There is only so much money available and 48 months will eat up the funds too quickly. Also not everyone would need the full 48 months supported employment. OVR tries to get other agencies to help if more time is needed. Members decided to table this conversation for the time being.
Staff informed everyone on the call that as of this date, not one appointment has been scheduled. This is a result of the budget issues and the possible shut down of the federal government on Friday, April 8th. Staff suggested postponing the visits till May. Members agreed with this idea. Members were told to cancel any travel or hotel reservations they already had booked and to keep the packets that were sent to them for the May visits. Mr. Giambrone stated he is continuing with his local visits and following all cuts, especially in youth, transition and veterans.
Ms. Williams asked all members that attended the public hearings in their districts to send in a report of what was discussed. Mr. Kauffman suggested using the form that was made up last year for this purpose. Staff will send the form out to all members to use for comments. Staff informed members that the May state visits will not be held since the legislators will not be in session.
The next Legislative Committee conference call will be on April 27, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. to discuss the Federal visits.
The meeting adjourned at approximately 10:55 a.m.
